Step 1: Body Positioning
Drop Step: If ball is hit to the right side of your body, drop step with your right foot. If ball is hit to the left side of your body, drop step with your left foot.
Communicate: Run to where the ball is going as quickly as you can. You want to beat the ball. Yell “Ball, Ball, Ball,” or “I got it, I got it, I got it” so you don’t collide with a teammate.
Keep your eye on the ball as you are running.
Position your body so you are moving forward when catching the ball – you don’t want to be falling backwards and be off-balance.
Step 2: Glove Positioning
Your glove should be about eye level and to the side of your face. You don’t want the glove in front of your face because you won’t be able to see the ball.
Your throwing hand should be ready to get the ball out of the glove quickly and ready to make a throw. You also want your momentum going forward when you are throwing the ball.
Step 3: Footwork
The same side you have your glove on is the side you should step towards the ball when you catch. So, if you are right handed, your left foot should be in front when catching a fly ball.
Once the ball is in your throwing hand, first step with your right foot and then step with your left foot and throw.
