Encouraging Reading through Sports

Encouraging Reading through Sports

My 7 year-old son, Cooper, learned to ride a pedal bike without training wheels at 2 years old, but he has found it challenging to learn to read. So, to encourage a love of reading, I have been exposing him to as many books as possible. And, of course, he likes stories about sports and athletes.

Here are a few of his favorite books that we have been reading and listening to:

Kid Athletes -True Tales of Childhood from Sports Legends: This is a favorite book in our household. My husband and I never tire of reading these short stories over and over again. We especially love how each story teaches a valuable life lesson.

Dream Big, Little Pig: This book was written by 1992 Olympic champion, a two-time World champion (1991 and 1992), and the 1992 U.S. champion ice skater Kristi Yamagucci. I love the message in this story. Our kids love the fun illustrations!

Noah’s Swim-a-thon: My kids have all been somewhat tentative to put their face in the water, when they are first learning to swim. So, they each related to the main character, Noah, in this story. The story is about a young boy, Noah, who attends a Jewish summer camp and overcomes his fear of swimming. We even learned some Jewish words too.

We also have been listening to books being read online. I am not a fan of a lot of screen time, but these I really like and teach some nice lessons. My favorite is Oprah Winfrey reading The Hula-Hooping’ Queen story.

The Hula-Hoopin’ Queen: Oprah does an amazing job reading this book. The joy in her voice is contagious. The words get stuck in my head after listening to her – which is a good thing!

LeBron James – The Boy Who Became King Children’s Book: My kids enjoy everything and anything related to basketball and this book is no exception.  After listening to this story about NBA superstar LeBron James the first time, they were inspired and excited wanted to go outside and play.

Froggy Plays Soccer: A simple story about a soccer player, Froggy, as he gets ready to play a soccer game against the Wild Things for the City Cup. All the Froggy books are funny and my 4 and 7-year-old boys enjoyed them immensely.

I hope that your children and you find these books as inspirational and entertaining as my family has!
